‘Tis the season to get spooky! Halloween is one holiday that we can all get behind – fun for kids and parents alike, cute costumes galore and of course, party time! But one thing that is a concern for most moms and dads is all that candy having a negative impact on little teeth.
Great dental health is something we’re pretty hot on here at Babycup, with Babycup First Cup carefully designed to promote optimal oral development, but of course keeping your Little Ones’ teeth in tip top condition is about more than good drinking habits. Fortunately, with a few nifty hacks, it is easy to create loads of low-sugar creepy food offerings your kids will love and we’ve rounded up our favourites to get you started.
We’re not total kill-joys though. Trick or Treating is one of the best parts about Halloween, so how can we get around this and the mountains of confectionary that often comes with it? Our advice is this: take the kids out round your neighbourhood, but leave an adult in charge of collecting all the goodies in one bag. At the end of the night, send kids away with their very own Babycup First Cup to take home filled with treats from the haul. A little something sweet won’t hurt in moderation (when followed by a good tooth-brushing!) and our dinky cups work as a wonderful party bag and extra gift in one!
Healthy Halloween Recipes for Kids
Slimy and horribly realistic, these gooey eyeball treats are tasty, super easy to make and about as healthy as it gets too!
What you’ll need:
For raspberry coulis
1tsp honey or a sweetener or your choice (optional)
Making this fantastically gory snack is really simple and so perfect for Halloween. Start by making your child-friendly raspberry coulis – mash your berries up with a fork and add your sweetener (if using!). Strain for a smooth texture or leave lumpy to be extra gruesome. You can make this up to 24 hours in advance, if preferred, or eat right away. Next grab a lychee, pop a blueberry into the pit hole. Drizzle with coulis and you’re done! Totally gross and delicious all at once.
Another easy one that is fun to make with kids too! These little banana ghosts are just adorable and everyone loves them! The best bit? They taste just like ice-cream (but nicer, we think).
What you’ll need:
4 ripe bananas (for 8 ghost-sicles)
85g desiccated coconut
handful dark choc chips
200g white chocolate (optional)
If using a white chocolate coating, melt your 200g bar by placing in a bowl on top on a pan of simmering water. Ensure that your bowl is not touching the water and keep stirring until you’re left with a lovely, melty mess. Set aside.
Prep a baking tray lined with paper. Peel your bananas, cut in half and pop a lolly stick into each (long-ways).
Sprinkle your coconut out on a plate. If using white chocolate, dip the banana into the chocolate before rolling in the coconut (if not, simply skip this step and go straight for rolling!).
Now make your faces – with chocolate chips! Place the finished bananas separated on the baking tray.
Freeze for at least 4 hours and eat within a week. Yum!
Baked Shrunken Heads
If your family loves carving pumpkins for Halloween, then you’ll have an amazing time making this warming classic. Combining cosy, wintery flavours of apple, cinnamon and ginger with seriously ghoulish faces!
What you’ll need:
1 cooking apple per guest
2 x stem ginger balls, finely chopped
4 prunes, chopped
¼ cup muscovado sugar (optional)
1 tbsp butter
First, pre-heat the oven to 350F. Core the apples and then the fun part…carve your faces! Consider the apples to be tiny pumpkins, but without having to go through all the effort of chopping and hollowing. Carve a face into the front each.
Next, score a line around each apple and place in a baking dish with a splash of water in the bottom.
Mix up your ginger, prunes and sugar (if using) and stuff into the empty holes left from coring the apples. Top with a little butter.
Bake in the oven for 35 minutes, or until you can slide a knife straight through the apple with little resistance.
The apples will shrivel in the process of cooking and you’ll be left with some really tasty shrunken heads to enjoy!
